 Carolyn Maddison is still at school when the Second World War breaks out. She is determined to follow her brother who has joined the RAF as a trainee pilot. When she does so she joins the WAAFs and makes friends with Lucy Gaston, a naturally quick-witted and exuberant personality, a perfect foil for Carolyn.
They train as Intelligence Officers and are posted to an operational bomber station in the prestigious 5 Group where they are responsible for briefing and debriefing aircrews, so are drawn close to the men who risk their lives in carrying the war to the enemy.
After one terrifying setback Carolyn is determined that she will not get involved in love with a man who flies with death on his wingtips. Lucy defies this attitude and marries the Bomb Aimer of one of the top crews in the Squadron. The arrival of a vivacious WAAF to join their Intelligence Section makes Carolyn wonder if she has done the right thing. Events in the air, which effects them all, makes them reassess their attitudes to a life that brings drama, heartbreak and suspense.
