When Arthur Newton announces that he is leaving his secure job, with the expanding railway system in nineteenth century Leeds, to pursue his dream of becoming a professional artist he meets opposition from his wife, Rose, who only agrees if certain conditions are met. He becomes a competent selling artist but loses the spark of inspiration that could raise him to the heights he desires until one day he visits Whitby and meets Colette, a young woman trying to embark on a career in the new and growing world of photography.
