Jane, a young woman with a secret from the past, living with her uncle and aunt in Scarborough, becomes friendly with Nell from Lowestoft and decides to move there and pursue a career in journalism.
They both form romantic attachments with fishermen Ewan and Simon. Through Nell's growing interest in photography they become friendly with Glen, a photographer.
With the outbreak of war the fishing boats are turned into minesweepers and the men thrown into battle.
Journalism and photography take Jane and Nell to London, the Battle of Britain, and the evacuation of the troops from Dunkirk. These events change the lives of these five people for ever.
Jane and Nell join the Land Army in order to stay together but, as they become rivals in love, tension grows between them. Their problems are heightened with the arrival of the U.S.Army Air Force and by betrayal. These troubles can only be ultimately solved through sacrifice and revelation.
